ACTIVITY 8: Looking at HTML

In this activity you will discover how you can view the source code (i.e. the set of instructions used to produce the website)
1. Log onto the internet and type in the following website: www.nelsonthornes.com

This is the website of the publisher for this book.
2. Rather than look at the content of the site. We are going to look at this HTML cod used to produce the website.
To do this, position the cursor anywhere on the webpage.

Right Click the mouse button.



Select View Source by clicking on it, using the left mouse button.

A window appears with code on it.
As you will see, it is very difficult to make sense of the HTML code, but there are some easy ways to create WebPages and websites.


How to create a website using HTML

There are 2 steps of creating a website using HTML
1. Use a program called an Editor or a word-processing package to produce your text with HTML.
2. Put the pages on a web-server, which is a computer with a permanent connection on the internet.

The tags are the words that are enclosed between < and > signs. They are HTML instructions and they tell the computer how to display or format the text.

Look at the sample code. We are now going to look at what each tag does.

and tells the computer that we are creating an HTML document

The tag tells the computer that the computer is starting and tells the computer that the document has ended.

The tags tell the document that you want the text between the tags to be shown as title. The reason fro the difference in the two tags is that the first one tells the computer where to start the title and the second one tells it where the title ends.

and

says that you want to text to be a heading of type h1. There are other headings, h2, h3, etc. to choose from. Headings coded h1 are larger in size compared with h2 headings and so on.

mean start and end a new paragraph. A break of approximately two lines deep is inserted between paragraphs.

Activity 5:Investigating the features of websites

Websites often contain a number of elements. When you design and create your own websites, you too can include different elements.
In this Activity, you will look at the home page (i.e. the first page you come to) of an unofficial website about the footballer David Beckham.

Look carefully at the home page of this site. Write down the names of as many elements on the home page as you can spot. For each of these elements, breifly describe why they have been included.

Evaluating Websites

It is essential to know what makes a good website.
A good website will
-contain worthwhile content
-be easy to find your way around
-be kept up to date
It is difficult to talk about a typical website because they are all different based on the purpose and audience.

The best way is to make a checklist and make sure the website does not make some of the common mistakes.

You are required to make an evaluation checklist for a website
Produce a checklist for 20 things you should look in a website.
There are two ways of evaluating a website
-Self
-peer (a friend or classmate does it for you).
It is best using both the methods.
1. Some things to watch
2. Too many moving images
3. Long scrolling pages
4. Information that out of date
5. Long download times
6. Links that do not work

Tips on website creation
-Keep it simple
-Do not put music or sound
-Make it pleasing to the eye
-Do not put slow loading graphics on the page
-Make sure the important information is at the top of the screen
-Avoid the use of pop-ups

What to consider when creating a website

When making documents to be used by others you need to consider who your audience will be.
Typical Audience include
Teenagers
Young parents
Males
Females
Senior citizens

Questions
1. In which of the above audiences would the size of the type used for the text be important.
2. If the site is to have lots of flash graphics with rap music which audience would be aimed at?
3. Which audience is more likely to be interested in cars and football?
4. Which audience is more likely to take a holiday outside school-holiday time?
5. Which audience is most likely to be interested in a site on cosmetics?

Expectation of Website

When you log onto a website, you have certain expectation about the site. Your experience of looking at websites has given you the expectations. When you design a website it important to meet your audience’s expectations.
