Today's Lesson A reflection by Asma

During today’s lesson we were able to share with the class what we thought of the articles we were given and what it meant to us. As a whole class we all agreed that this article touched us and made us understand that we should always respect other people’s culture. As a person I have grown emotionally towards that direction and as a goal to archive I want to be able to be compassionate towards other individual’s cultures and practices. I also learnt that being flexible towards every angle of what we see is a way of accepting diversity.
This lesson also brought us as a class together in that now we hope and are striving to respect our diversity and also being able to live in a respectful mutual environment. This session has also changed people’s perspective about how to ask questions around certain people. I loved this session hence I will try to archive the goals that I have set for myself after the lesson

During that lesson we revised as a class the culture article that Mr. Gioko posted on the blog. everyone in the class said what they felt about the article. when we were disucusiing the point that arissed very often was the fact that westernization was overulling our culrue and another point that ariised often was the fact that people are forgetting their culture and most likly shoving it in a box and putting that box in the corner and completly avoiding the fact that its in that corner

During the lesson, we reflected as a group on the article "culture conflicts and advancements", and it was very interesting to note that the entire group strongly felt that many cultures have been influenced by westernization. It was very pleasant to see how members of the group were understanding and tolerant of other cultures, as well as being able to explain their own cultures clearly. It was also good to realize that after reading and discussing the article, many in the group got to learn in depth about other cultures, and how important it is to respect each other's and our own cultures.

Today’s lesson was very interesting as I got an opportunity to speak in front of the whole class. We spoke about culture conflict and advancements. Before this interactive lesson, we had researched about this topic. During today’s lesson we all got a chance to share our thoughts about the article that we read. After reading the article, I felt that I should starting knowing more about my culture and seriously follow my tradition. I also felt that I should respect other people’s culture and rituals. After reading the article, it stimulated me to think in a different perspective about my culture and my identity. Now I know the importance and the real meaning of the term culture and that I should follow it more seriously. Today’s lesson was the best even though we did not use any computers or laptops.

In today’s lesson I was able to share with the class what I learnt from the articles we were given. We all talked about how beliefs we should be more pluralistic and respect each other’s cultures and traditions. I have learnt a lot about different people’s culture, which include their clothing, food, religion etc. I also learnt that even with their differences people can be right. This lesson made us realize that we were all right in one way or the other and we should accept people for who they are, not what we can make them into. I have realized that I should now respect everyone and understand them. This lesson was an eye opener for all of us who need to follow their culture and not forget it.

during the lesson we reflected on the article given by Mr. Gioko on "culture conflicts and advancement" or one of the article we found. we first sat in a circle and we were told to reflect on the article that we found or the article that we were given. we were told to say what we think about the article.what I said was the people are abandoning their culture because they think the the western way of live is cool so they are trying to be someone else. what i learned is the to always respect other cultures and how they live

Today we sat around in a circle and discussed our reflections on the articles we read about culture. We each got picked and said out our reflections while others reflected on them. Most of our punch lines were similar. Some went like: Don’t imitate others, Be who you are, Respect your culture and others cultures, etc. We had very long talks on how always remember where you belong and who you are, our cultural clothing and festivals and languages and after all that we realised that the main point was for us to learnt to respect our own and others cultures and never loose your identity.

Durıng the lesson, we talked about the artıcle that we were gıven by Mr.Gıoko. ıt was a good artıcle because, through the artıcle many people ın our class understood that they have to respect other people's culture. As a class we understood that we have to accept people the way they are and before judgıng them, we have to know about our own culture and hıstory. It was a great lesson that helped everyone to know and share each other ıdeas.

Today was a very interesting lesson as we were able to learn many different ideas that popped up from the various articles that we read. As for me, I thought that one of the important lessons was:

You are not what you say you are, you are not what you think you are, and you are not what your father is, you are what you are, and you may be surprised when you figure out what that is. ~Dr. Peregrino Brimah.

With this passage, I realized that many people act as though they are someone else. For example, an Indian coming from the USA may pronounce his words and sentences in an American accent, even though he has not developed it. This may be to show or whatsoever, but why should he do it? I believe that you should be who you are and not what someone else wants you to be. Don't lose your identity because that is the way things are in the world today. From the other article I read, I learnt that the Pakistani culture possesses "imported" cultures along with its own, which isresulting in cultural colonization. These are two words that I made up, which mean to me as though somebody or something is changing the way things are supposed to be. In the class, other people's ideas were that westernization is having a bad effect o our cultures. Like for example, because we think it is "cool," we were suits and ties in hot Africa. Yet without them we would still uncomfortable as if we don't belong. This is wrong as it is stealing your culture from your own hands and instead is imposing a westernized culture on you. Another example that was mentioned, was that employees get fired just because of the cultural clothes that they wear. Mr. Gioko, himself, gave us an example that he hates wearing the suits and tie and that they make him feel very uncomfortable. But, he is forced to wear them because of certain rules and regulations for employees. Lastly, someone said something about preserving our culture. They said that the main point culture exists today is for preservation purposes. Many other examples were mentioned during the interesting conversation as well.

On the 22nd of August 2013 Thursday we had a C.T for the first lesson and on that C.T lesson we were discussing about the story that we read and we were also discussing about our reflection that we did on the story. The story was mainly about cultures and how other people left their cultures and they started following the western people in everything and it also said that people should not discriminate others because of their culture and lastly is that the article is talking about Barrack Obama on how he is Kenyan and American, so the main thing was that we were to say what we understood and what we reflected about and we were also supposed to say what really interested you and what really touched you and what part of the article did you like. So on that day Mr.Gioko told us to get in class and bring our chairs to the front then he started to ask us then he started to ask us those questions then and on that day we learnt a lot of stuff we learnt that people should be standing for their culture and not fight other because of their culture and so many other stuff in this lesson I learnt to cooperate with my fellow classmates and I really learnt a lot.

During today’s lesson, we shared our opinions about the article we read on Culture. Everyone shared their ideas and from that point it seemed that everyone had been affected by that article including me. It really meant a lot to us and changed some of our perspectives towards other people and taught us that we have a culture and we must preserve it. It told us that we must not be shy of our culture but indeed be proud of it. This made me start appreciating people more than I used to do before.
I also learn’t that judging people by their values and beliefs and assuming that what they do is wrong and what I do is correct. Therefore, Today’s lesson kept me in their shoes and think from their point of view. The lesson, also made us interact more with each other and respect our differences. “You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.” – Ray Bradbury.

Todays’ class was something like a forum, I can say, we had to sit at the front of the class as a group and each of us got a number. This was because we all had to provide a reflection on one of the two articles we were supposed to have read the day before to say, what we liked most about it? Why we liked it and what it meant to us. So through all those people I learnt that culture cannot be defined by one word but by the beliefs and values or the clothing or the festivals that people enroll in. but at the same time, you cant describe someone only through this but also through their heritage and inquiring because they might as well be doing something because they have no choice or frp the sake of it and not because they believe in it. They also brought out the fact that we are supposed to judge peoples cultural beliefs all of us are somewhat different from each other and what is true to you might not be the same to them. Hence bringing out the fact that we need to embrace and respect other peoples’ cultures.
I also learnt that in this world of today people are tending to confuse cultural advancement with modernization. It has reached a point whereby some people don’t feel that they belong or feel comfortable unless they wear suits and tight ties nowadays but its wrong!!! We need to learn to embrace our cultures and that of others or else our ways will die out… and that culture is not genetics but social environment and that brought up the fact that my environment has ethical diversity. Thus bringing out the point that I can do something starting by me accepting my classmates for who they are and loving them for who they are no matter what and use our differences to bring out the best of us. And for this to happen I need to learn how to RESPECT all my peers and fellow students but it will be hard as respects is earned and not just given to you. This was a very good eye opener that touched all the little details like just the way you say something, the manner, can have a large effect on the person it was directed to. Thanks to all my classmates this lesson was the most enjoyable C.T lesson I’ve had!!!

in this lesson we sat as a group giving the different reasoning for the different articles in which we found and the ones we Mr. gioko sent as on the blog .during this we could come to a conclusion that different cultures can be effected by the advancement hence causing different individuals to forget their cultures.

We did things differently today in the C.T. lesson. We reflected on the article on culture conflicts and advancement. We sat in a circle and we picked a number and when the number lands on you, you have to talk about what you learnt from the article and what it meant to you as a person and how it has changed you perspective of looking at other people’s cultures. We realized that at the end of reading the article most people changed their opinions about most things and how they look at other cultures.

during the lesson we reflected on what we read some of us had not read i may have not read everything. Not everyone read the same article but the one on the blog did touch me because people changed the way they dress (their cultural clothing) because of the world judging them and leaving them out as "outcasts"........... but my saying is " dont be afraid to be who you are if people cant respect or appreciate your culture thats their own propblem cause you can learn many things about each others culture."

As for me, today, from reading that questioning article, i came to learn something that will probably get me reflecting forever about my true African identity. how have i lived as an African? have i been proud of what i am really meant to be or am i among those who fly with the wind, following wherever it takes me..... have i been influenced by what others think, say or do and not what i really stand for and believe in? this really reminded me that many at times we mistake our identity for something that we are not, we let others to influence us and forget our own backgrounds and even trade it for other peoples. but in the end, we are the same people who cry over how our children, parents, relatives, friends have been influenced deep into westernization that they can hardly remember to speak our own ethnic language, dress as true Africans, live, look , laugh and speak like an African....

i also came to know that however diverse in ethnicity we are, at the end of the day, we are still all human beings and should live together in peace and bond as brother under the shadow of love...we should not let our difference to divide us but let it to help us appreciate one another, to respect and value having someone so different from us besides us to teach us something new. we should know that different people have different opinions and we should respect one anothers ideas...

Dr. Peregrino Brimahc ion his article " culture and conflicts advancement" says and i quote that...

"In the discussion and study of cultures and ethnic groups, there is the relativity theory, which views all cultural values as being relative and as such there is no better than or worse than. What this means is that even when you see a culture that indulges in cannibalism, you must not approach them from a self confident and superior vantage point of knowing you are right and they are wrong. It is relative, as far as human knowledge and interaction goes, what is right in your culture can rightfully be wrong in theirs, regardless of how much larger your cultural group is. This is called, cultural relativism. Anthropologists would explain that, to communicate with and if need really be, change a culture, you need to be able to learn, assimilate and become that culture."

so my punch line is; we must learn to stick to our cultures and respect it but we should also respect other peoples cultures... after all you don't get respect, you earn it through respecting others...

In today's lesson, it was a very active and interactive discussion about the culture preservation article.I really like the article especially the main ideas which were why should we preserve our culture, why should we give a care in the world about how people react to our cultures and why we should respect each other. What really was good about the lesson was that there was a strong current of ideas, opinions and feelings about the article. This lesson has really inspired me to become more pluralistic, to get to know other people’s culture and respect them and to preserve my culture better. So in conclusion here is a quote from Mony Dojeiji and Alberto Agraso González: "The peace we seek in the world cannot appear until its flame is first lit in our hearts. It is a divine force that whispers gently but insistently, coaxing us ever deeper into the dark recesses of our souls, shedding its healing light and liberating us from our fears. It is a wondrous journey of personal liberation that, for me, continues to this day.".

On Thursday CT lesson we were supposed to share with the class what we thought about the article we were given to read and what it meant to us. Everybody in my class was supposed to say something about what they learn't about the article and all of us was given numbers so that it can be equal that everybody could say something. Many people said that we should respect everybody culture and not laugh on the languages they speak. As whole class we agreed that this article has touched us and we should all learn from it. I would still like to know that the differences between my culture and other cultures. They are different types of cultures clothing. This lesson was very good because we all learn't a lot of culture and now we know that we all should respect everybody culture and they environment they stay in.
